Abstract
This paper explores the evolving landscape of the metal music industry, with a specific focus on the realities facing modern metal musicians. Drawing from both academic research and personal experience as a longtime member of the death metal band Death Island, the study examines how traditional revenue streams, such as touring, merchandise, and record sales have shifted in response to broader changes in the music business. While platforms like Bandcamp and independent labels continue to provide alternative pathways for income and exposure, the decline in touring profitability and low streaming payouts present major challenges, especially for emerging and niche artists in genres like metal and hardcore. This paper aims to document the current state of the metal music ecosystem, highlight the role touring still plays despite its financial strain, and offer insights for musicians seeking sustainable careers in an increasingly unstable industry.
