Abstract
The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world. Worth of a Woman: The Power Politics of Childbirth establishes how low social and economic value prescribed unto women by institutions determines the poor treatment encountered by them during childbirth. This link is made apparent using theoretical and empirical evidence of paternalism and sexism in the United States capitalist healthcare system.
