Abstract
Over the past few years, physical education teachers have been having a difficult time trying to get their middle school students to want to participate in physical education class. Less and less students are intrinsically motivated to want to participate in physical activity. As a result of this, more students are setting themselves up for failure in terms of setting up a routine and maintaining a healthy lifestyle for their future. Engaging and effective strategies are needed to understand how physical educators can help intrinsically motivate and engage students in physical activity. The purpose of this synthesis project is to review the literature on effective strategies used to motivate middle school students to participate in physical education.
