Abstract
For the early portion of the medieval period, monks were the primary artists and workers behind illuminated manuscripts, often laboring for months or years to complete one book, which they did not get to keep for themselves. I imagine that putting so much effort and time into one project, only to see it disappear into someone else's hands forever, would be somewhat heartbreaking for an artist who loved their craft. This project, via a visual narrative styled after manuscripts typical of sixth-century Ireland, tells the story of a monk working in the scriptorium of a monastery. He labors long and hard on a manuscript that is very dear to him. It becomes his masterpiece. When it's complete, he can no longer bear the idea of parting with it, and he flees the monastery, taking the book with him. This project will take a thorough look at the connections between art and servitude, focusing on themes of labor, process, and creative control. As a graphic designer and an illustrator, I chose this topic because of worries I have about entering the workforce and losing creative control over my life's work.
