Abstract
This paper examines the role schools play in the success of students at-risk who often struggle in school and face the threat of dropping out. It explores the potential for schools to equip students with a sense of belonging, meaningful student-adult relationships and a supportive school climate. This potential is largely considered in the context of the social studies classroom, which proves to be a significant setting for students to be empowered and have their needs addressed. Specific methods and materials for optimizing the social studies classroom are captured through a VoiceThread presentation. VoiceThread is a web-based application where interactive presentations can be created and shared with a broad, online audience. This presentation serves as a unique, supplemental resource for teachers to make the most of their social studies classroom and have a greater impact on the success of all students.
