Abstract
In an era defined by technological disruption, environmental volatility, and shifting global security challenges, the ability to think critically about the future is no longer a luxury—it is a leadership imperative. Futures Research: Forecasting Change, Shaping Tomorrow was written to equip students, educators, and public-sector professionals with tools to navigate uncertainty, anticipate disruption, and influence emerging futures with integrity and foresight. Rooted in real-world leadership, this open educational resource (OER) blends academic theory with applied insight. It is informed by decades of service in law enforcement, community-based public safety, and institutional resilience. At its core is a belief that the future is not something that simply happens, it is something we help shape. The chapters in this book are modular and accessible. Each includes foundational concepts, real-life applications, and scenario-driven exercises designed to foster ethical, analytical, and strategic thinking. Discussion prompts, analytical tools, and capstone assignments challenge students to move beyond passive learning and become active architects of the future. While written primarily for undergraduate learners, this resource is designed to support lifelong learning, cross-sector collaboration, and global adaptation. Whether you are a public safety official preparing for future crises, a business leader stress-testing resilience plans, or a student imagining a more just world, this book is your invitation to think critically—and boldly—about what comes next. This is not a text about prediction. It is a compass for possibility. Dr. Mark L. Whitman, Ph.D. Alfred State College, SUNY June 2025
