Abstract
"Not your average holiday", one might see a similar statement on an advertisement for what they may or may not know as "Dark Tourism". Interested in the deadly? The dangerous? The macabre? Look no further than your local tourist hot spot, because what you might find is a deeper reflection of commodity and consumerism; a sort of pornography of misery, you can't look away. This paper employs the idea that the average dark tourist might have more to their death chases than one might think. What pushes one to the edge can be desired but at the same time feared. I explore the phenomena that is dark tourism through Dr. Philip Stone and Richard Sharpley; as well as John J. Lennon and Malcolm Foley's work on thanatological perspectives.
