Abstract
Through a careful analysis of O'Hara's life, both in the years leading up to his move to New York City in 1951, and in the 15 years in which he lived in the city, this paper seeks to explore how O'Hara's life influenced his poetry. From the myriad of artists that he befriended during his years in NYC to his position as a curator at MOMA, O'Hara's abundant 15 years were reflected in the wide range of poems that he wrote. By looking at a few of those poems, one can begin to understand how O'Hara viewed poetry's relation to the world. O'Hara's poetry was, and still is, two-sided in how it interacts with a reader, for O'Hara balances a fine line between a serious intimacy and a casual aloofness.
