Abstract
What I didn’t realize at the time was that in rejecting the interpretation of a feminine woman as catty, superficial, and stupid. I imagined a stronger, more empowered woman must be a more masculine one. As I’ve grown up and learned more about the complicated relationships between strength, gender, and expression, I’ve found that many of my early ideas of what a strong woman looked like were rooted in misogyny and self-hatred.
