Abstract
This study investigates whether fear can be triggered unconsciously in highly socially anxious individuals. There were 20 socially anxious participants and 19 non-anxious controls who were sorted based on their ranking in the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) and a brief diagnostic interview for social anxiety disorder (SAD). Participants were shown presentations of masked and visible disgusted and contented faces. Arousal was measured as skin conductance responses (SCRs), which were collected throughout the experiment. The data indicated that, regardless of masking, socially anxious participants showed significantly higher arousal toward disgusted than contented faces. Meanwhile, the non-socially anxious participants only displayed significant arousal toward disgusted faces when they were visible.
