Abstract
This study looks at the Christian imagery of Marc Chagall, and how Chagall used the classic scenes of Christian iconography to make a statement against the injustices of antisemitism that plagued the Jewish people throughout history, and more specifically, during World War II.
Chapter One looks at Chagall's early Christian work, and how he used this work to protest both the historical and current oppression and persecution of the Jewish people in his native Russia. Chapter Two looks at the expansion of this body with the rise of Nazi Germany and the horrors of World War II, and his use of the crucified Christ, as the Jewish martyr for all of the Jews of Europe. Chapter Three focuses on the continuation of his use of the crucified Christ after the war, as both a martyr and a savior for the Jewish people.
