Abstract
This paper examines how parental emotion regulation shapes children’s emotional development and behavior. Key subtopics include the development of emotion regulation, co-regulation, emotion coaching versus dismissing, coercive control, boundaries and discipline, and rupture and repair. The review highlights that parental self-regulation and consistent, warm parenting practices promote children’s resilience, while harsh or inconsistent responses contribute to dysregulation and behavioral difficulties. The paper concludes that mental health counselors can enhance family functioning by supporting parents with evidence-based regulation, coaching, and connection-building strategies.
