Abstract
When covert communication methods utilized by the queer community for their own safety eventually come to light in a more public manner, it can manifest itself in physical violence, suppressive lawmaking, or further subjugation and punishment of the minority group. These groups have always existed under the radar, which can be seen in the material historical record, and many of these methods or languages are being brought to light or reimagined through artists working today. At the forefront of this vitriol has been Drag performers, as they are uniquely visible in revealing the artificial and socially constructed nature of gender. This lack of education in the distinction of these groups renders them most vulnerable to heteronormative and transphobic activism, however, if we acknowledge that these groups have always existed and have been forced to the periphery it can create a much safer modern environment for us to progress.
