Abstract
The purpose of this capstone is to address the challenges that English Language Learners (ELLs)face, and how Social Emotional Learning (SEL) can help to support their success academically and socioemotionally. The overarching question for this capstone is, how can we ensure that teachers are addressing the academic and socioemotional needs of ELLs. Research shows us that there are several challenges that both ELLs and teachers face daily. Since ELLs typically begin school with lower achievement than non-ELLs, and those achievement gaps often close slowly. An additional challenge for ELLs is the high demand to acquire a new language and adjust to a new culture. Challenges for teachers working with ELLs are the lack of understanding of what it means to be an ELL, how best to support these students and inadequate training. In this capstone, the PD focuses on the relationship between ELLs and SEL. The PD will offer opportunities for participants to learn about themselves, ELLs, SEL and strategize through group and individual activities. The PD’s learning goals are for teachers to understand the positive impact that SEL can have on ELLs, and how to utilize strategies effectively in lessons. Additional research must still be completed on the correlation between ELLs and SEL in order to best support our current and future ELLs
