Abstract
Gentrification and the arts have often been associated with each other, leading the arts to be blamed for the displacement of lower-income residents. This case study was conducted in Getty Square of Yonkers, NY. Its purpose was to analyze the process of gentrification, the differences between gentrification (the rapid property value increase of an area resulting in displacement) and revitalization (the gradual uplifting of an area focused on community investment), and why the arts appear to be the perpetrator. By conducting site visits, proposing qualitative research questions, researching the difference between gentrification and revitalization, and researching the different key players in the gentrification process, this case study found that the new developments and fine arts organizations in Getty Square were in fact revitalization due to the efforts of investing in the existing communities.
