Abstract
My exhibit titled "What If. . ." is focused on the many questions my sister Lyndsay asks herself everyday. The unknown is one major reason why her anxiety heightens. I captured not only her emotions but those places and situations that cause her anxiety. This disorder has controlled Lyndsay's life to a certain degree for many years now. At the age of 10, she began to experience attacks that began small and grew more intense over time. All of the issues going on in the wold like terrorism, school shootings and constant violence on the news, aid in her feeling anxious. Every stranger she passes, like the man at the train station, to locking herself in the car to keep the outside world at a distance, plays into her fears of What If.
When setting up my exhibit I took into consideration her emotions while experiencing anxiety. She has expressed to me that in the moment, she feel out of control, overwhelmed and uncomfortable. I wanted the viewer to experience, even if just for a moment, a sense of what Lyndsay feels. I hung my five main images from the ceiling. Viewers are able to walk around them seeing them from all sides. Having them displayed in an untraditional manner added to the sense of being slightly uncomfortable. The chain materials used to suspend my images were symbolic of the feeling of confinement felt by being controlled by this disorder.
