Abstract
In novels Passing by Nella Larsen, and Trumpet by Jackie Kay, characters Joss Moody and Irene Redfield are emboldened by the Jazz Age and Harlem Renaissance. Jazz music creates a space for identity and sexual fluidity and for the gender binary to be slipped. Jazz's roots in the African American community and its investment in improvisation allow for characters to cross the boundaries of race, gender, and sexuality. My project addresses and prove the different kinds of crossing that are possible.
