Abstract
This essay is a study of three texts: The Tin Drum and Peeling the Onion by Gunter Grass, and A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. These texts have a great deal in common, in that they were both influenced by medieval literature, but written in a modern, semi-autobiographical way. Through textual evidence, I explore the ways in which these novels are related, and how their authors' lives became a part of their work. I also discuss the carnivalesque themes of these books through a Bakhtinian lens. The final chapter is about Peeling the Onion, which I use to show the conditions under which he wrote The Tin Drum.
