Abstract
The growth responses of Anacystis nidulans to sodium, potassium, and phosphate, were studied in batch culture under controlled laboratory conditions. Sodium (within the range 0 - 10 mg/I) significantly enhanced growth most notably after starvation for sodium and phosphate. The magnitude of the increase in growth was dependent on the initial cell density, external concentrations of phosphate, sodium, and potassium, and the nutritional status of the algal inoculum. Potassium was found to be required for optimization of this sodium effect.
