Abstract
This paper focuses on do-it-yourself (DIY) venues in New York City. It will begin by providing a historical overview of the state of DIY venues dedicated to emerging art and artists starting in the 1960s and explores the struggles faced by these venues in present day. It concludes with an analysis of the rise and fall of prominent Brooklyn venue The Silent Barn and methods of sustainability for DIY venues to ensure to long-term viability. The research and analysis presented here is to provide context and a useful framework for organizers and others committed to the presence and support of DIY venues everywhere.
