Abstract
Technological advances and internet proliferation have spurred opportunities for remote research, highlighted during the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, local research ethics policies have lagged, stymying participation in global research initiatives. As prior research has shown the state of a cohesive international ethics protocol has caused issues in multiple disciplines before the pandemic. In the scope of the social sciences, the pandemic opened up a huge opportunity: online research where the gap in cross-cultural research could be bridged is now left in a state of limbo. Thus far no literature has established an international online research protocol. This study aims to describe the state of research ethics policies of social science research by outside investigators using secondary data from universities, governments, and ethics commissions. We aim to examine fees, permits, and ethics approval processes.
