Abstract
This essay explores how Tim O'Brien's 1990 Vietnam War novel The Things They Carried runs concurrently with the earliest scholarly and sociocultural critiques of American exceptionalism in the mid-to-late 20th century. Themes of imperialism, postwar trauma, ethnocentric solipsism, and Orientalism found within the novel are examined and interpreted in conjunction.
