Abstract
When I explored the beaches of Alaska that I grew up on as a kid there was an animal under every rock. Each little pool of water was a whole universe of hermit crabs, sea urchins, star fish, and anemones. Now they are empty. The reasons for this are complex, just like nature itself, but it is safe to say that humans are at the core. Lifeless beaches are just one example of how climate change and human activity has affected Alaska. My sculptures and paintings are an exploration of my nostalgia for my childhood in nature, and a reflection on what it is like to see the world around me change. I want people to see the wonders of the place I love, and experience the beauty of nature through my art. I also want people to understand and grieve for the destruction of the things that make Alaska so amazing.
