Abstract
Flood myths, stories of catastrophic floods sent by the gods, have been present in several cultures across hundreds of years of human history, often with similar, recurring themes and elements. Where do they come from and what do they mean? Using translations of incomplete clay tablets, Ovid's poetry, and Genesis, I examine five different variations on the flood from different areas and time periods, analyze their key similarities, and through historical and geographical context, discuss the possible reasons why the flood myth remains prominent in human culture.
