Abstract
This senior thesis investigates the cultural, emotional, and nostalgic dimensions of video games, transcending the traditional view of games as mere entertainment. The research addresses the challenges posed by digital store closures, emphasizing the importance of preserving video games as a cultural medium. Drawing on Janet Murray's perspective, the study explores video games as a narrative medium that not only elicits positive emotional experiences but also fosters empathy. The examination of nostalgia marketing strategies employed by brands establishes a connection between the vintage appeal of gaming items and the emotional engagement of consumers. The thesis proposes an exhibition, "Beyond the Controller," which celebrates the cultural significance of video games through an immersive 80s-themed bedroom, interactive elements, and community engagement. By delving into the societal impact of video games, this research contributes to a nuanced understanding of the medium, positioning it as a dynamic force that shapes our culture, emotions, and collective memory.
