Abstract
As classroom populations become increasingly diverse, teachers are facing challenges in regard to their student's English language development. The purpose of this capstone project is to optimize instruction on how teachers can best support English language development for ELLs in all classrooms. This capstone reviews literature on second language acquisition and the theory of transactional reading. It also analyzes the challenges teachers and students face when developing English language. To mitigate the challenges, this capstone includes a professional development (PD) on best practices that teachers can incorporate into their instruction. The PD presents this information to teachers of all content areas and specialties. The goals of the PD are to develop a deeper understanding of the above referenced theories, explore challenges faced by teachers and ELLs, to discuss the best practices to promote English language learning, and to apply all this information to promote academic and social success.
