Abstract
Assigned Female is a multidisciplinary project that examines how language has been used to control and diminish individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB), and how reclaiming this narrative can serve as a powerful act of resistance. Drawing from personal experience, academic research, and visual storytelling, the project explores the intersections of gender, power, and memory.
Central themes include the weaponization of language, words like "hysterical" and "bossy," and the societal structures that continue to marginalize AFAB individuals. Through photography, installation, and alternative bookmaking, the work challenges institutional control over bodies and knowledge.
A key component, The Reproductive Garden, is an interactive exhibition reviving historical uses of plants in reproductive health, reconnecting AFAB individuals with knowledge often erased.
At its heart, Assigned Female is about reclaiming space, history, and agency. It invites viewers to reflect on the cyclical nature of gender oppression and the enduring power of collective resistance.
