Abstract
This paper explores the variety of Museum Studies opportunities offered to undergraduate students at Purchase College- State University of New York. I examine how academic programs such as coursework, internships and work-study positions provide hands-on experiences of museum practices. Using my own experiences in Museum Studies and Arts Management, courses and how, through these opportunities, I've been able to collaborate with artists, curators and my peers. I gained first-hand experience on exhibition management, curatorial work and community engagement, which prepared me for future career opportunities in the arts sector, stimulating my academic and professional growth. Through a discourse analysis, New Museology, as an interdisciplinary field, is explored, which encourages a reimagined museum model of visitor engagement and the development of creating lasting relationships between a museum and its visitors. I highlight the importance of offering Museum Studies exposure to students as undergraduates. Gaining knowledge in a museum or gallery setting and how it has the potential to prepare them for successful entry into the workforce, making them competitive for positions they wish to apply for.
