Abstract
The tension between sustainability and the economic realities of farming grows increasingly visible. Although New York is one of only three states with more than 1,000 organic farms, it continues to lose sustainable farms and operations yearly. Meanwhile, industrial farms, which are among the biggest contributors to the global climate crisis, receive the bulk of financial support from the government. Facing a system that incentivizes environmental harm, New Yorkers across the state are leading grassroots efforts to make sustainability the norm in their local communities. Though their work faces many obstacles, they choose to persist, driven by a vision of a mutually beneficial relationship to the land.
