Abstract
This project examines how schools can utilize assessments that more effectively support multilingual learners. Many current assessments are designed with native English speakers in mind, which adds more difficulty for students who speak other languages in demonstrating what they truly know. It views culturally and linguistically responsive assessment as a better way to include all learners. When students can use their home languages, connect learning to their lives, and express their ideas in different ways, they are more engaged and confident. The project also examines what teachers need to effectively implement these practices, including training, support, and time for reflection. Common challenges, including limited resources and strict testing rules, are also discussed. Drawing on Translanguaging Theory, Funds of Knowledge, and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, this project also demonstrates how including families and communities in the assessment process can strengthen learning. This project supports the idea that assessment should not just be about scores, but about giving every student a chance to feel valued and successful.
