Abstract
The Great Lakes system consists of Lakes Superior, Huron,
Michigan, Erie, and Ontario, as well as their connecting channels
and the St. Lawrence River, which connects the lakes to
the Atlantic Ocean (Fig. 13.1). The Great Lakes Basin includes
the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. states of Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
and New York. The basin covers about 765,000 km2,
including the upper St. Lawrence River (Neff and Nicholas
2005).
