Abstract
As society becomes increasingly more connected through growing information conglomerates, the profit-seeking imperatives of surveillance are profoundly shaping social, economic, and political spheres. Artificial intelligence and individual technologies have captured the public imagination and have been imbued with the myth that they are an autonomous, determining force of social change. Through close examination of the histories, perceptions, and practices that direct these technologies into action, the author problematizes the egalitarian promise put forward by the manufactures of data-extracting technology. Peering beyond the surface of the screen, the paper addresses the risks presented by the union of surveillance and capitalism and provides a critical framework for interrogating the larger power structures that operate technologies.
