Abstract
Course Goals Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand the main ideas of propositionally and linguistically complex discourse on both concrete and abstract topics delivered in standard language or a familiar variety, including technical discussions in their field of specialization. Students will be able to follow the essentials of lectures, talks and reports and other forms of academic/professional presentation which are propositionally and linguistically complex. Students will be able to recognize the point of view expressed and distinguish this from facts being reporting. Students will be able to understand most TV news and current affairs programs. Students will be able to give clear, detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest, expanding and supporting ideas with subsidiary points and relevant examples. Students will be able to give a clear, detailed description of how to carry out a procedure. Students will be able to develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting their points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples.
