Abstract
In direct response to an abuse of power and restraining social conventions the artists Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Wangechi Mutu, Sarah Nicole Francois, and the collective Fecal Matter are able to create new, freeing realms within their own work. In a pattern of themes such as the anthropomorphic, grotesque, mutated, celestial, and occult one is able to find a reflection of self-identity and annihilation of body sanctity that has enforced the work of marginalized artists for over one hundred years.
