Abstract
Social Media has become an enormous part of the twenty-first century.  The goal of this study was to establish to what extent does social media effect self-esteem.  Examining Instagram through Grounded theory, and Content Analysis, I discovered that social media effects how a personal idealizes others and themselves, their body image and their relationship with language to others.   Discovering these themes, I concluded that when people are using social media, they are trying to make their self-esteem rise or their peers’ rise.  People are generally positive and want to praise others and make them feel good.  In reality, it may affect a person’s self-esteem in a negative way even if it is not meant to.  This study should remind people to be mindful of what they are posting and commenting, and how it may affect them or someone else.
