Abstract
This thesis grew out of a desire to make something that felt present alongside my practice as a painter; messy, emotive, contradictory, compulsive, intuitive, and dramatic. Over the past two years, it has become more and more clear how much I want my work to be for and with my friends and loved ones. This thesis is in many ways a thank you to them. Included are notes taken during critiques or while making work in the studio, a poem I have never shared, conversations with friends, images taken with my phone and from the internet, artists I admire, books I love, lyrics from some of my favorite songs, and thoughts and things that take me outside of myself. Thank you to all the artists I have met at Purchase, especially to my mentors and cohort. This thesis feels like it’s only the beginning, and threads are just starting to be pulled. It never ends!
