Abstract
When it comes to being a designer, the expectation is that your practice will revolve around the needs of others. Coming to terms with this reality was not an easy step, so being given the opportunity to explore my own ideas wasn't taken for granted. With this newfound freedom I decided to create a pilot chapter for an original dystopian science-fiction comic called ORBIT. This chapter is composed of five pages, hung together as posters. Each page is densely packed with detailed illustrations using creative shot composition, lighting, and expressive figures. In addition to the five posters, there is also a collection of free zines on a podium below. These zines each include several standout panels from the comic, with a brief explanation of my artistic choices, characters, story, and inspiration. This project has pushed me to learn new skills like how to use drawing tablets and programs like Procreate. I also further developed skills I've already learned, like scanning traditional drawings, page layout and typography, logo design, exhibition setup, and more. The idea that started the story of ORBIT was its setting, Satellite City. Inspired by the United States, Satellite City is a cluster of thousands of skyscraper-like space stations orbiting a deserted Earth, abandoned following an apocalyptic war. In Satellite City, plants are viewed as the most valuable resource, whether in food, medicine, art, or decoration. Despite being near-essential to human survival, plants are restricted only to those who can afford them, with that largely being just the wealthy. Here we meet Troy, a young, hard-working man trying to support himself and his family through his blue-collar job at ALL co. Unfortunately for Troy, working in this system isn't as rewarding as it should be, and he finds himself struggling financially. Through this chapter, we follow a day in the life of a working man, and the struggles he faces in Satellite City.
