Abstract
Consent. Get it. is a sexual assault prevention campaign designed to raise awareness about consent. Knowing what consent looks like and how to ask for it is vital to preventing many sexual assaults from occurring on college campuses. In developing my campaign, I created a visual system around which I designed posters, informational fliers, videos, Instagram posts, and wristbands. My visual system has bright colors and active type design to intrigue the eye of the on-the-go college student. I designed 3 posters that provoked thought in the reader with the statements, “Consent should be CLEAR,” “Are you sure?,” and “Sexual assault leaves people feeling like…this.” The design of my posters transformed these words into feelings as I treated each poster differently based on what kind of reaction I wanted the reader to have. I designed two informational fliers, the first being about the foundations of getting consent. I realized that not only do I want students to know how to get consent, but also how to be there when a friend comes to you and says they’ve been taken advantage of, so my second poster is about how to be a good friend to sexual assault survivors. When considering how I wanted to get the word out about my campaign, I realized that Culture Shock is an event on my campus that leads to inebriation. It creates ideal conditions for aggressors to take advantage of their peers. During Pre-Shock, a precursor to Culture Shock, I set up a booth next to the Culture Shock merchandise station and launched my campaign. I handed out more than 250 wristbands, which say “Consent. Get It.” and “I stand against sexual assault,” to students during the launch of my campaign. I received a lot of positive feedback for my campaign as well as a tremendous amount of support.
