Abstract
Broadly within social science and psychopathology, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a highly stigmatized condition, too often subject to stereotypical misconceptions by neurotypical medical professionals. Within the media, characters and celebrities with ASD are often infantilized against their will and therefore stripped of their sexuality (Krasinski 36). With my research, I aim to expose a pattern linking neurodivergence to non-normative sex practices, including but not limited to kink, BDSM, Polyamory, pre-negotiated scenes, and sensorial play (Pliskin et.al and Schöttle et al.). Furthermore, I hope to bring to light the symptomatological predisposition that lends neurodivergent individuals to seek out nonnormative sex more often than their neurotypical peers (Schöttle et al. and Pearson et.al.). Lastly, I am interested in how inaccurate social media representation, ( i.e. Autistic roles being played by neurotypical actors), influences sexual stigma towards ASD individuals, therefore impacting how they mask their symptoms. With this project, I aim to complete a fundamental analysis of Neurodivergent (specifically Autistic) sexuality and its misconceptions relative to expressions of “non normative sexuality,” ie, kink and BDSM.
