Abstract
Part essay, part creative, this fusion project is based on research and passion for fairy tales. The essay portion lays out a brief origin of the folklore tradition from orality to the written word and then discusses how adaptation and the transformations of fairy tales and their tropes has affected the author's own work. In the three part creative section there is both fiction and poetry. The fiction portion plays directly with images and story lines traditionally associated with fairy tales, but now using the lens of capitalism, aging, and the natural world to reinterpret the tradition. The two poetry parts take a more abstract and personal approach. In the first poetry portion, the poet uses the we perspective, blurring the lines of self. In the second poetry portion, she uses the I perspective to more closely look at the relationships she has with those around her. Magic and reality are one and the same in this collection and cruelty is the highest sin.
