Abstract
Vincent Van Gogh is known for both his vibrant, expressive paintings, and his short, troubled life. There are many disjointed theories on the ailment which hospitalized Van Gogh and very few ever question the direct impact it had on his artwork. There is a common belief that Van Gogh’s art would not be as magnificent if he hadn’t suffered as he did. It is true that Van Gogh’s mental illness plays a role in the creation of his most successful paintings, however it also undoubtedly caused him a lifetime of misery. Understanding the impact his illness has on his work, and how that impact is viewed historically, can help us to better understand individuals with mental illness and their unique way of seeing the world. It will also help us to better understand Vincent Van Gogh, both as an artist and as a person whose immense passion has affected the world long after his untimely death.
