Abstract
This review paper outlines the present research on parasocial bonding, including a brief history of the concept in media studies, a description of the different types of parasocial bonds in the broader context of user-figure relationships, and a discussion of the various theories regarding the potential purposes of these mediated bonds. Using evidence from previous studies in the field, I hypothesize that parasocial bonds can be especially beneficial, both directly and indirectly, for minority group members and people with low self-esteem. The current state of research in this specific area is also discussed and critiqued, with suggestions for how future studies may be conducted in order to gain a clearer picture of how parasocial bonds can affect different populations.
