Abstract
This curriculum project explores strategies for integrating mathematical discourse into high school algebra instruction through a four-lesson sequence on solving systems of equations. Grounded in research on discourse-based mathematics teaching, the project emphasizes structured opportunities for students to reason, communicate, and make connections among multiple solution methods, including graphing, substitution, and elimination. Each lesson is designed to promote collaboration and explanation of mathematical thinking. The project includes a literature review establishing the theoretical framework for discourse in the classroom, lesson plans with supporting materials, and an implementation statement analyzing classroom outcomes. Findings suggest that purposeful student conversation deepens conceptual understanding and strengthens problem solving skills. The curriculum provides a model for teachers seeking to enhance mathematical discourse within algebra classrooms.
