Abstract
This essay delves into the multifaceted representations of Medusa, the iconic Gorgon from Greek mythology, as portrayed in art throughout various historical periods. Adopting an evolutionary lens, the exploration begins by examining the evolutionary process of artistic representation of Medusa from grotesque to beautiful. The analysis further considers how artists across epochs have employed Medusa's visage as a reflection of societal anxieties and psychological fears. The feminist perspective uncovers layers of gender dynamics within Medusa's depiction, scrutinizing how her character has been both objectified and empowered in art. The essay highlights the evolving narrative of Medusa as a symbol of feminine strength and vulnerability, addressing the intersections of power, victimhood, and agency within the context of patriarchal societies. By scrutinizing depictions through a feminist lens, the essay elucidates the evolving socio-cultural implications of Medusa's image. Additionally, an apotropaic lens is applied to unravel the protective and ritualistic aspects associated with Medusa's representation. Exploring the ancient belief in her apotropaic qualities, the essay investigates how artistic interpretations of Medusa were employed to ward off evil forces and serve as a talisman against malevolent influences.
