Abstract
Irish Americans were able to establish an identity in the United States so that they may not only keep their culture and traditions alive, but also to help them find their place in this new society. To aid in this, Irish Americans formed various nationalist groups and organizations, like the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with parades, banquets, lectures, and dinners. My great- great- great grandfather, Thomas Kerrigan, was a famous Irish piper who, unlike typical immigrants, owned a business, and it was through his talent and his business that he contributed to the creation of an Irish American identity. I was able to trace my family history, beginning with Kerrigan, and figure out how each generation contributed to the Irish American community through the 20th century.
