Abstract
Studies have explored how libraries are conceptualized, the roles librarians perform, and how technologies are used within libraries. However, few sociological studies focus on linking new technologies to an evolution of libraries and the librarian role. Though, these conversations are happening within the librarian profession at conferences, webinars, and on professional discussion forums. This study will not only focus on the implementation of technology within public libraries, but it will also focus on how technologies have shifted the ways in which patrons and librarians interact and create the heterotopia of the library. My study aims to answer several questions. (1) how are new technologies being introduced and used within public libraries, (2) how are new technologies changing socialization patterns between librarians and patrons, and (3) how does this shift in socialization patterns serve librarians, and in what ways does this change the way they navigate their professional role? With data gathered from interviews with librarians, this research examines how new technologies are simultaneously embraced within libraries, while causing librarians to evolve their role in order to better serve the needs of their respective communities.
