Abstract
Alien Worlds: The Illustrated Codex is a speculative pseudo-encyclopedia combining AI-driven image generation with sci-fi worldbuilding to critique colonialism, environmental degradation, and technological advancement. Inspired by Luigi Serafini's Codex Seraphinianus and guided by aesthetics from artists like H.R. Giger and Lisa Meinesz, the project uses emerging AI models to build an immersive alien universe. Centered around a divergent evolution of humanity, the narrative follows the rise of an AI-merged Galactic Federation that colonizes alien ecosystems, leading to wars and the erasure of native species such as the Thal'nari, a tree-bonded species inspired by Avatar. The Codex combines MidJourney curated visuals, AR elements, ambient soundscapes, and a book to simulate an artifact of conquest. By assuming the art director, sound designer, and worldbuilder roles, I constructed a visual language defined by dark, cinematic compositions. The project acts as both a narrative and a self-aware reflection on the tools used to make it, blurring the line between fiction and critique. In doing so, it questions how we use technology to advance, erase, and/or control. This work positions me to contribute meaningfully to the future of graphic design as AI continues to redefine creative processes.
