Abstract
In recent years, the music industry has undergone immense changes driven largely by the advent of streaming and social media. Before the internet, music was always distributed physically, from records to tapes to CDs. The internet is responsible for revolutionizing how music is consumed, created, promoted, and monetized. The days of fighting for radio and TV spots are over. Promotion and distribution have been democratized, granting anyone savvy enough the ability to reach a large audience. This has given rise to more independent artists and multimedia companies that focus on content creation, promotional strategies, and alternative revenue streams. As a result, record labels' roles and the importance of album sales have been greatly diminished. This paper will explore the shifting landscape of the music industry over the last several decades and how both artists and businesses alike have adapted, leading to the growth and influence of multimedia companies.
