Abstract
The internet has a long history with the word aesthetic. With each new social media platform the word has stuck around with the creation of different types that cycle through or last through time. The names vary from vaporwave to cottagecore, each having its own history and cultural impact. Social media’s obsession with these aesthetics comes down to multiple factors from tastes to algorithms built to engage its users with them. Photography is the perfect medium to help capture the essence of aesthetics. This thesis will explore a variety of current social media aesthetics through photographs. It will demonstrate how impactful aesthetics are and get to the root of why social media users are obsessed with them.
