Abstract
Ballet sets the tone for what dance is; not only is it the first style people think of and see, but it also holds the foundation a dancer needs for every other style of dance. Unfortunately, there is much systemic oppression in the professional ballet world. When black ballet dancers were featured for the first time as premiere ballerinas in the 1930's-50's, they were made to powder their skin, to have it appear lighter (Jacolb, J). There are still extremely recent findings of a gender wage gap among artistic directors in the top 50 largest ballet companies (Dancedata). These inequalities, though seen in different ways today, are still heavily prevalent, likely due to the rigid and strict nature of ballet.
